Wye Valley AONB “Best Bits”

Staying at Penterry Holidays puts you in the heart of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – a landscape of river gorges, ancient woodland and storybook ruins. Here are some of the “best bits” to help you plan your stay.

Iconic History & Heritage

Tintern Abbey

Just up the valley, Tintern Abbey is the Wye Valley’s showstopper. The soaring Gothic ruins sit in a bend of the river, surrounded by steep, wooded hillsides. Wander through the roofless nave, explore the cloisters, then follow the riverside path or head up to Devil’s Pulpit for that classic, elevated view back over the abbey.

Chepstow & Its Castle

A few minutes’ drive from Penterry, Chepstow Castle guards the lower Wye. It’s one of Britain’s earliest stone-built fortresses, which is perched above the river. Combine a visit with a stroll through Chepstow’s independent shops, cafés and riverside walks.

Castles Trail: Raglan & Caldicot

Within easy reach are two more Cadw highlights: Raglan Castle, a romantic, turreted ruin with sweeping countryside views, and Caldicot Castle, set in a peaceful country park – ideal if you want a gentle walk with a side of history.

Walks with Wow-Factor

Offa’s Dyke Path

The Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail threads through the Wye Valley, offering everything from short circular strolls to full-day hikes. Expect big views, peaceful woodland and plenty of picnic spots – many walks can be started a short drive from Penterry.

Symonds Yat & River Viewpoints

Head north to Symonds Yat Rock for one of the most famous viewpoints in the Wye Valley. From the cliffs above the river you can watch peregrine falcons (in season) and follow waymarked trails through the forest, before dropping down to the riverside for a drink or a boat trip.

On & Under the River

Canoeing the Wye

The Wye is perfect for adventure. Local operators offer canoe and kayak trips ranging from a couple of hours to full days. Drift past wooded banks, spot kingfishers and herons, and finish at a riverside pub.

Clearwell Caves & Underground Adventures

For something different, explore the ancient iron mines at Clearwell Caves. Walk through atmospheric caverns, learn about the area’s mining heritage, and then head back into the daylight for woodland walks nearby.

Food, Drink & Lazy Days

Local Pubs and Dining

The Wye Valley has everything from rustic pubs to fine dining. You’ll find cosy inns with log fires, local ales and hearty menus, as well as destination restaurants for a special night out – all within an easy drive of Penterry.

Simply Soak Up the Scenery

One of the real “best bits” of the Wye Valley AONB is the slower pace. Build in time just to sit with a coffee by the river, watch the light on the hills, or return to your cottage or hut at Penterry to enjoy the peace, dark skies and birdsong.

Whether you’re here for castles, canoeing or quiet walks from the door, the Wye Valley’s highlights are all within easy reach – and you can retreat to the comfort and seclusion of Penterry at the end of each day.
